When friends open your wishlist, they see all your items with links to buy them. They click "Claim" on what they want to get you — and the claiming is completely secret.
You'll see that items are claimed, but never who claimed them. Other friends will see those items are taken, so nobody buys duplicates. It's the perfect system for keeping surprises intact.
